About the program

A focused observership - designed by clinicians, for clinicians

The IKS Observership Program places early- and mid-career ophthalmologists at accredited keratoconus centers around the world. Observers spend 4–12 weeks immersed in real clinical practice, diagnostics, cross-linking, ICRS, transplantation, under the direct supervision of a senior corneal surgeon.

Common questions

A few quick answers

What does the observership cost?

The program itself is funded by IKS — there are no programme fees. Observers are responsible for their own airfare, accommodation, insurance, and visa fees.

How long is each placement?

Placements run between 4 and 12 weeks. Most are 6–8 weeks. Length is agreed during the matching step based on the host center's capacity and the observer's goals.

Does IKS arrange accommodation?

Not directly, but each host center provides a list of recommended options nearby, and many maintain relationships with local guesthouses. You'll get this info as soon as you're matched.

Is the certificate recognised?

The IKS Observership Certificate is signed by both the host center and the IKS Board. It's widely accepted as evidence of advanced corneal training, but is not equivalent to formal sub-specialty board certification.

What's the application timeline?

You can apply year-round. Review takes up to 4 weeks. After approval, matching typically takes another 4–8 weeks depending on host availability. Plan for at least 3 months between application and travel.

Is English required?

Yes. The program operates in English. We don't require a formal test score, but you should be comfortable participating in case discussions and rounds in English.

Can I split time across multiple centers?

Multi-center placements are possible in some cases for longer (10–12 week) observerships. Mention this preference in your statement of interest.

Can my spouse / family travel with me?

Yes — many observers travel with family. Your sponsoring-institution and host-center letters will reference only you, and you're responsible for any family-related visa and accommodation arrangements.

Is there post-program support?

Alumni are added to the IKS Observership alumni network — regular case-discussion calls, an annual reunion at the World Congress, and ongoing access to IKS expert faculty for second opinions.

Can I apply more than once?

Yes — observers occasionally do a second placement at a different center to broaden their training. Wait at least 12 months between completed observerships before re-applying.
